Artist Statement

"Art communicates feelings and ideas through various mediums. My work uses visual media to express individual, emotional, and spiritual messages through the treatment and transformation of scenes from life."

Fine Art Photography

Creative freedom is a rewarding way to produce unique artwork. Various artistic techniques are combined to strengthen the shapes, textures, and colors within an image. Specific camera lenses and filters provide different ways to convey the message. My images are shot with professional quality equipment, and all of the negatives are organized in multiple databases. Each fine art photograph is printed on archival canvas or photographic paper as a signed and numbered limited edition with a certificate of authenticity.

With photography, the light and its reflections are continually changing. Working quickly and efficiently in the moment is necessary to make the most out of each opportunity. This constant change in natural lighting is a challenge, but it is an intriguing aspect of photography. The reward often comes from waiting on the light and its reflections to fall at exactly the right angle.

My photography focuses on how to encompass an image with light and its reflections. Whether incorporating bright colors, the values expressed in a black and white photo, or how the light reflects off of the subject and cuts across the background; the light and its reflections are crucial to illuminating the message of each image. Utilizing the colors within the visible sections of the light spectrum can reveal scenes and subjects in a different light. From highlights to shadows, all of the different values are integral parts of an image. Taking the time necessary to measure both the light falling on a subject and the amount of light reflected off of the subject allows me to obtain the intended effects. Specific moments in life can be displayed with supplementary lighting as a visual representation of what was gained from that experience. Each fine art photograph is artistically developed to emphasize the unique story portrayed in the image.

Mixed Media Fine Art

The creativity involved in combining photography, watercolor, pastel, and ink provides many ways to accentuate the message within a work of art. My process begins with the use of professional quality cameras and filters. I shoot in raw format, and maintain all of the negatives in organized databases. The application of creative methods begins during the image capture. Determining the desired values in an image is critical to the application of color theory. Composition techniques are applied with careful consideration to the message I want to convey. The photographic image is arranged, cropped, and specially developed in a black and white format. Sometimes I combine portions of multiple photographs into a single image. Pigment ink is utilized in this process because it remains unchanged throughout the painting process.

Artistic development techniques are applied to reach the optimal amount of texture before the black and white base is printed on acid free archival quality fiber paper, soaked in water, and stretched on a board for painting. Pen and ink are often used to define individual details. Watercolors generate a transparent glow, while pastels provide softness and add rich colors. When an opaque water medium is required, I utilize Gouache and Chinese paints. I believe that painting in multiple layers adds variety to the range of colors in my artwork. This creative process results in a mixed media painting on fiber paper that unites the strengths of various mediums. Every mixed media painting is unique because it includes visually represented memories of what makes a person or place special.
